How come the Inn of the Five Graces in downtown Santa Fe has remained a favorite with travelers and the travel media for over 25 years?

More recently, US News and World Report ranked Inn of the Five Graces as the 76th best hotel in the United States – out of 6,172 hotels. The next closest hotels to Santa Fe are the Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi at #340 and the Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado Santa Fe at #406.

The Auberge des Cinq Grâces is not a traditional hotel structure.

It’s a centuries-old barrio neighborhood of single-family homes and buildings on East De Vargas Drive, pieced together by Ira and Sylvia Seret since 1994. They now own the north side of De Vargas from Old Santa Fe Trail to the Supreme Court from New Mexico and the south side of the Old Santa Fe Trail to the Santa Fe Playhouse.

A walk down the street is a walk through the historic Barrio de Analco. The Auberge des Cinq Grâces is a series of adobe and stone structures, each different, some dating back to at least the 19th century.

As often happens with historic adobe structures, where the exteriors are indescribable but the interiors can be opulent, the street view of the Auberge des Cinq Grâces gives no idea of the elaborate Silk Road setting, the Middle East and South West that the Seret family has infused into the structures.

“The Five Graces Inn has everything you would expect of a premier hotel, including a central location, exceptional customer service and unique amenities,” Zach Watson, travel editor at US News and World ReportRecount The New Mexican. “But it’s the atmosphere of the Auberge des Cinq Grâces that sets it apart from other luxury properties and makes it a memorable stay. My favorite aspect of the hotel is the colorful hand-laid mosaics in each bathroom. Accommodations also feature carefully curated antiques, rugs, textiles, and other treasures from across the Eastern Hemisphere, making it easy to forget you’re staying in Santa Fe.

The Auberge des Cinq Grâces is an outlet for the artistic impressions of the Serets. Sylvia Seret’s tile and mosaic art features prominently in all rooms, and Ira Seret’s 50+ year collection of Silk Road artifacts and furniture are the basis of interior decoration.

The hotel is a showplace for many artifacts in their Seret & Sons store, which they opened in 1981. Over the decades, the Serets and their sons Isaiah, Sharif and Ajna have also elevated the services to the customers at a level corresponding to art.

Lisa Cloninger, who splits the year between Amarillo, Texas, and Angel Fire, has years where she stays as many as 12 and even 30 times at the Auberge des Cinq Grâces.

“Last year, I think I was their No. 1 customer,” she said.

Cloninger estimates she’s stayed in no less than 400 hotels in 51 countries and 40 states.

“It’s really unique,” she says of the Auberge des Cinq Grâces. “I have only stayed at 10 other places as good as Inn of the Five Graces. Service is the best part for us. People are a big part of it. There is a positive attitude. They never say no. It’s really like home. That’s why I like it.

In June, the Serets tapped Passport Resorts Management of Big Sur, Calif., and Erin Poders as general manager to manage and operate Five Graces, taking over from Sharif Seret as general manager and the Seret family. , who had operated the hostel since 2008.

Poders came to Santa Fe after working on the transition of a Jackson, Wyo., hotel from one brand to another and before that worked as the general manager of the Malibu Beach Inn. He worked in 16 hotels for 26 years.

“It’s really the experience,” Poders said of the Fives Graces hostel. “That’s what the seasoned traveler is looking for. This place transports you to another place in time.”

Poders describes how a valet escorts guests from their vehicle to reception, where a person then walks around the property and details the history, and brings them to their room, where the key and a personal letter await the guests.

The average room rate at Inn of the Five Graces is $1,100 per night, Poders said, with rates ranging from $750 to $4,000. The largest accommodation is the three-bedroom, three-bathroom, two-story Luminaria Room with full kitchen which opened in 2009.

The room rate includes breakfast as well as in-room snacks and beverages, which may include brie and crackers and “fresh tortilla chips and smoked salsa,” as described in a New York magazine review in January.

“This place is death by a thousand sweet kisses and little touches,” New York‘s Foster Kamer wrote in January. “It won’t be more obvious than when you walk into your bathroom… To call these bathroom tiles is to call Guernica a nice picture or Hamlet an interesting piece.

Sylvia Seret and a team of local artists took broken tiles and pottery acquired in Mexico and other countries to create tile mosaics in the rooms, public areas and spa. A mosaic on the tub walls evokes a view through the arches of a lake and mountain setting.

“It’s a visual experience in the bathroom,” said Sylvia Seret. “Our hosts tell us: ‘We keep discovering new things.’ ”

Wherever there is no tile, Ira Seret incorporates carved woodwork from the Silk Road as trim and cabinet doors.

The 25 rooms are scattered across several buildings, including three courtyards and a number of tranquil fountains inside and out.

After living in Afghanistan for 15 years, Ira and Sylvia Seret met in Santa Fe in 1977 and opened Seret & Sons. They wanted another place to showcase their Silk Road findings. In 1994, they acquired all of the buildings on the north side of De Vargas Street, from the Old Santa Fe Trail to the two-story stone house in the middle of the block.

“We opened as bed and breakfast [in 1996] with nine or 10 bedrooms,” said Ira Seret. “We never thought it would become a hotel.”

The first incarnation was called 1001 Nights of Seret.

His Ajna Seret describes the early years as “extremely sweet and charming. We had a general manager who baked cookies for the guests.

“For me, the milestone was when we were in Architectural Summary [in 2002]“said Ajna Seret.

Garret Hotel Group of Charlotte, Vermont saw the article and quickly leased and operated the newly renamed Five Graces of Serets Inn until the Great Recession of 2008.

“For me, it was the beginning of the trajectory where we realized what we had and what we could do,” said Ajna Seret. “It confirmed that we were on the right track. We could do something special, something unique.

The Auberge des Cinq Grâces has been under construction for 26 years. A new spa with five treatment rooms — and more mosaic tiles — opened in 2019, as did the new room called Juniper, just off the Old Santa Fe Trail. Last year, the Serets acquired a few homes across from the Santa Fe Playhouse which are now being converted into four more rooms, and the old spa area will also become a new room.

A year from now, the hostel will have approximately 31 rooms as its fourth distinct era continues to take shape.

The Auberge des Cinq Grâces has three distinct eras: 1996-2002, 2002-08 and 2008-21. All of this leads into this new era, with Passport Resorts operating the property.

But don’t think that Sylvia Seret knows where this new era is going.

“I don’t know,” she said. “We don’t think like that. We just go day to day.
