Stephanie Holmes stays at Black Shed, Waipū

Location: A five-minute drive between Waipū town and Waipū Cove, The Black Shed sits on a private road on a hill overlooking Bream Bay.

Style: Small but perfectly formed architecturally designed house, with a modern style.

Perfect for: An easy escape from Auckland where there is room to breathe.

Price: Starting at $318 per night.

First impressions: You will first fall in love with the sweeping panoramic views of Bream Bay. The house itself is no less impressive. It’s the size of a shipping container and a simple box shape, but everything has been carefully designed and organized inside and out.

Beautiful upholstery and simple yet effective storage solutions, pretty artwork and fresh flowers are a delight to look at. But no one takes attention away from the view – floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors along one entire side of the shed allow you to watch it from anywhere, and you really won’t want to look away.

Rooms: A small bedroom is large enough for a comfortable king bed, built-in shelving and storage space. Sheer linen curtains allow the day to gently greet you when the sun rises (or pull the blind if you prefer to sleep).

The kitchen/dining/living room is open plan, with elegant framed prints and vases containing fresh cut flowers from the property’s wildflower garden, which also serves a very pretty rose beehive.

Every piece of artwork, furniture and kitchenware was curated for the home, with host Emma John saying she “wanted everything that everyone touched or saw to be fun”. You’ll find eclectic pieces ranging from a handmade 1970s tea set in Christchurch, to a vintage Vladimir Kagan sofa shipped from Melbourne, to a Filipino fossil table bought from a store in Waipū. A beautiful dark green velvet window seat was commissioned especially for the space and made by Lou Ashford of Snick. Everything fits together beautifully.

Bathroom: Rinse off in the outdoor shower, then walk through the side door straight into the bathroom inside the house – great for making sure the sand is stopped in its tracks. Ashley and Co toiletries are provided, so you can be sure you’ll smell great.

Food and drink: The house is well appointed for cooking or taking a quick drive to the local restaurant The Cove. Mangawhai is only a 30 minute drive away if you want to check out the famous tavernas and weekend markets. Appliances include a Wilfa coffee maker and a Weber grill.

Facilities: Free Wi-Fi, full kitchen, washer and dryer, parking for two cars. The wall-mounted smart TV (which doubles as the artwork) has all the major streaming apps, though you’ll need your own credentials to use them.

In the neighborhood: The shops, cafes and bars of Waipū are nearby. Learn to surf at Waipū Cove Beach or stroll the beautiful coastal promenade. Book a horseback ride in the stables of Tui. Or just relax on the deck and enjoy the view.
