SaphirKeramik is one of the latest innovations of global significance from the Swiss manufacturer Laufen. This revolutionary ceramic material achieves its exceptional hardness mixed with corundum, a colorless mineral, which is a component of sapphires. This gives SaphirKeramik a flexural strength equal to that of steel. Still, it has the potential to be ultra-thin, giving designers almost endless freedom to experiment – and tear up the rulebook of bathroom design.
SaphirKeramik is an innovative ceramic material, which has all the hygienic advantages of traditional bathroom ceramics, but is thinner, more defined and extremely robust. Its special properties are due to the addition of corundum, found through years of research and development by Laufen. Since its launch in 2013, SaphirKeramik has become a material of choice for many architects and bathroom planners, as it enables a new design language with bathroom ceramics, similarly not possible with more ceramic material. conventional.
Strong and malleable, SaphirKeramik allows the creation of thin but ultra strong walls of 4 to 5 mm and tight edge radii of only 1 to 2 mm while maintaining the traditional production process. Its slender profile makes it space-saving, light and environmentally friendly.
The development process
Laufen uses thinner ceramic body and simpler structure to reduce weight compared to conventional ceramic. The advantages are multiple: reduction of raw material costs and energy consumption in production and transport.
The result is clear: ceramics with fine edges and almost alive: living square bowls designed by Andreas Dimitriardis, the graphic lines of the washbasins from the Kartell by Laufen collection designed by Ludovica and Roberto Palomba, the amazing textures of the trays and washbasins. in the design series of VAL by Konstantin Grcic and the razor sharp shelf of the INO washbasins designed by Toan Nguyen.
Pushing the boundaries of innovation
Laufen continues to push the boundaries of the material by harnessing its ultra-fine shapes not only to create extremely detailed textures and patterns, but also by designing the innovative material to increase its maximum size – a 120cm long sink made of SaphirKeramik is the largest to date. The brand is also constantly innovating by collaborating with established designers to create new collections using the material.
More recently, Laufen commissioned Dutch star designer Marcel Wanders to create The New Classic collection, given the exceptional reputation he has established around the world with his extravagant style and innovative use of materials and craftsmanship. technology. For Laufen, he had all the credentials needed to shape a new contemporary design language using his SaphirKeramik material. The result is characterized by soft, soft feminine curves reminiscent of the opening petals of a flower, alongside angular masculine elements. Given the tension generated by this approach, The New Classic’s distinctive presence is considered unprecedented in the sanitary ware segment. To allow the complete layout of the bathrooms with The New Classic, Laufen has assembled a very large and versatile collection, including superb SaphirKeramik washbasins.
Here is the Product Watch Pitch that Jon Bond, Head of Projects at Laufen and Roca, recently presented to an audience of designers, architects and hoteliers at Hotel Designs LIVE:
Sophisticated attention to detail
To accompany The New Classic bathroom collection, Laufen has also created a range of accessories from SaphirKeramik. Among the items are a wall shelf, a soap dish, a toothbrush holder, a toilet brush holder and an elegant oval mirror with the original feature of being framed in SaphirKeramik.
According to Marcel Wanders, âFor the first time, the state-of-the-art SaphirKeramik has been cast into a classic and iconic shape. This light yet strong material has given us the unique opportunity to celebrate the beauty of fine porcelain with our elegant and soft lines.
In addition to being a Recommended Supplier, Laufen was a Product Watch Pitch Partner at Hotel Designs LIVE, which took place on May 11, 2021. The next Hotel Designs LIVE will be on August 10, 2021
